Trove Terms of Use

Last updated: 1 November 2026

Trove is free, open-source software made by Gilouloum, an individual developer based in France. By installing or using it, you agree to these terms.

Using Trove

You may install and use Trove, free of charge, on any computer you own or are allowed to use, for personal or professional purposes. Trove is open source: its source code is published under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later, which lets you read, change, and redistribute it under that license's conditions. Where these terms and the GPL differ about the code itself, the GPL applies.

Your files

Trove never uploads, copies or moves your files. It can, however, delete files from your disk when you ask it to: by default they go to the Recycle Bin or Trash, and some actions offer a permanent delete. You can turn off every delete from disk in Settings → Allow deleting files from disk.

The Bin. Files you send to Trove's Bin (for example by swiping them away in Flick through) stay exactly where they are for 30 days. After that, Trove sends them to your computer's Recycle Bin or Trash by itself, unless deleting from disk is turned off. Until then you can restore them from the Bin.

Please keep backups of the photos and videos that matter to you, as you would with any software.

Your photos and the people in them

You are responsible for the photos and videos you manage with Trove, and for having the right to use them.

Face recognition is off until you turn it on, and it works only on your computer: no face, photo or name leaves it. If you use it on photos of other people outside a purely personal or household use (for example for a business, an association or a club), you are responsible for complying with the laws that apply to you, such as the GDPR in the European Union: in particular informing the people concerned and, where required, getting their consent.

Do not use Trove to break the law or to infringe anyone's rights, such as their privacy, their image rights or someone's copyright.

Services run by others

Some features rely on services run by third parties: map imagery and elevation (Esri), place names (OpenStreetMap's Nominatim) and updates (GitHub). The Privacy Policy lists what each one receives. These services have their own terms, may change or stop at any time, and their content, such as map imagery, remains the property of its providers, credited on the Globe.

Updates

Trove checks for new versions and downloads them in the background. An update is installed when you restart Trove.

Open-source components

Trove includes components made by others, each under its own license. They are listed in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.

No warranty

Trove is provided "as is", without any warranty that it will be free of bugs or suited to a particular purpose. To the extent permitted by law, I am not liable for any loss of data or other indirect damage resulting from its use. This does not limit liability for gross negligence or wilful misconduct, nor any liability that the law does not allow to be limited. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived by law.

Privacy

What Trove sends and why is explained in the Privacy Policy.

Changes and law

These terms may be updated here, with a new date at the top. When they change in a way that matters, Trove tells you in the app.

If a clause of these terms is found invalid, the others still apply.

These terms are governed by French law. If you are a consumer living in the European Union, you also keep the protection of the mandatory rules of your country of residence, and you may bring a claim before its courts.
